Knowing the best time to plant is essential for optimal germination rates and overall success. Eggplants are warm-season crops, meaning they can be planted once the soil temperature reaches about 21–24°C , typically in late spring after the last frost.

How Long Do Eggplants Take to Germinate?

Eggplant seeds usually take 7–14 days to germinate, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels. During this time, keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged to ensure healthy sprouting.

Prepare Your Planting Bed

The first step in planting eggplants is preparing the planting bed.

Even the Soil

Take a final pass over the surface with a rake to smooth the soil and remove any remaining debris or rocks from the bed.

Sow The Seeds

Using a pinch of eggplant seeds between your thumb and forefinger, gently roll your fingers back and forth, allowing the seeds to fall into the soil about 1 inch apart.

Cover with Fine Compost

Cover the seeds with a thin layer of fine, sifted soil or compost. This helps retain moisture, ensuring the seeds have the conditions they need to germinate properly. The layer also prevents the seeds from drying out too quickly between waterings.

Watering the Eggplants

Watering eggplant seeds requires care, as excessive water pressure can displace delicate seeds or wash away the soil. It’s best to use a gentle watering method, such as a fine mist or drip irrigation, to keep the soil consistently moist.

Thinning

Once your eggplant seedlings have sprouted and are large enough to handle, thin them out to about 18–24 inches apart, allowing room for the plants to grow. This spacing helps prevent overcrowding and promotes healthy development.

Harvesting

Eggplants are typically ready to harvest in 70–90 days, depending on the variety. Check for mature color and size—when they reach their full size and the skin is glossy, they are ready to be picked. Gently cut the fruit from the plant using a sharp knife or pruning shears.
